Skin Cancer Facts
Everyone is at risk for skin cancer. In fact, one in five Americans will develop a form of skin cancer. You probably know someone who has had basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, as they are the most common forms of skin cancer.
The most serious and deadly of skin cancers is melanoma. While it can occur anywhere, most people develop melanoma on the upper back, lower legs, torso, head, and neck. Early symptoms can include new, rapidly growing moles or moles that itch, bleed, or change color. If you notice any of these differences on your skin, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Getting checked as soon as possible can mean a better prognosis for you. Skin cancer is highly treatable when detected early.
While anyone is susceptible to skin cancer, those with a first-degree relative, such as a parent or sibling, diagnosed with melanoma have a 50% greater chance of developing the disease as compared to people who don’t have a family history of the disease. Exposure to ultraviolet light, either from the sun or from indoor tanning devices, can also increase your risk of developing melanoma.
During your appointment with our staff, we will not only screen for skin cancer, but we will also create a customized program for any necessary treatments, enhancements, and maintenance of your skin.
Why Choose Long Island Dermatology
When you make an appointment with Dr. Eckman at Long Island Dermatology, you can rest assured you will receive a very thorough mole and skin cancer evaluation. We practice photographic mole mapping so we can keep an eye on your moles, note any changes, and spot any additional moles that may develop over time. Because they are an early indicator of skin cancer, they are key in detecting the disease as soon as possible. Dr. Eckman, with a background at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, conducts all patient examinations personally. You will feel as comfortable as can be during your thorough exam, as our patients wear gowns throughout the evaluation.
If we do need to do a biopsy on any suspicious areas of the skin, we are able to easily identify the location of the moles that are checked because of our photo mapping technique.
Setting an appointment for your skin cancer evaluation that fits your busy schedule is easy. At Long Island Dermatology, we hold convenient office hours Monday through Friday and we’re open every other Sunday.
